Short-Sightedness

“Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.”

Genesis 25:34

Dear Friends,

What would you give for a bowl of the best chili you’ve ever had? This was the situation that Esau found himself in during a time of extreme desire. In one fell swoop he gave up his birthright, and effectively, the favor of God for dinner.

While we may scratch our heads and wonder at such an uneven, even ridiculous, exchange we must understand that this temptation is not unique – all of us are lured by the evil one to sacrifice future blessings. For sure, Esau was short sighted. He must’ve reasoned falsely in his mind that it was better to have something physical in your hand now then something spiritual later.

But his desire wasn’t that much different than what we face today. For example, when someone trades in private time with the Lord for career or do some sport, he forfeits the eternal. When men and women turn back on their marriage covenant in order to pursue a temporary fling the problem is short-sightedness.

At some time, we will face the choice of future gain or present pleasure – don’t let it happen to you! Consider your decisions carefully.
