Worry Versus Responsible Concern

September 30, 2018

“Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?”

Matthew 6:25

Dear Friends,

It is natural and common sense to take thought about future things, or as the old saying goes, “prepare for a rainy day.” It is a good thing to have savings accounts, reasonable insurance and budgets. To be a responsible citizen is important. We teach our children to have integrity, discipline and to be concerned about their future. But what starts as responsible concern, sadly, often rolls into worry. What is the difference between worry and responsible concern?

According to Jesus, when we worry, we have anxious care about something with which we really can do nothing about. Worry is thinking that it all depends on us and little or nothing to do with God. Ultimately, worry is just relying on self and not trusting on God.

That’s exactly what Moses reminded us of in Deuteronomy 8:17-18 “And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth. But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.”

We must always remember, it is God that gives us the strength, brains and opportunities to do what needs to be done. Worry is doubting whether God can take care of us. But know this, God can and will – He is an awesome God!

Don’t Worry,

Dr. Tim Pollock, Senior Pastor
