The Blessings of Godly Fatherhood

“Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table.”

Psalm 128:3

Dear Friends,

Most people think happiness comes from money or success. And yet, the Bible says that it’s a godly life that brings happiness. A godly dad obeys God and as a result, he shows it by the way he lives.

Let me ask the fathers reading this: What do you want to be remembered for? I want my children to remember me for my character. I want them to say, "My dad walked in the ways of God." Psalms 128 contains a special message to fathers, if you're one, I'd like you to notice 3 blessings of fatherhood:

1) The Blessing of CONTENTMENT

Psalm 128:2 says, "For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee." There's something wonderful about honest work — providing for your family and coming home to enjoy the simple pleasures God has given is truly one of the great privileges of life.

2) The Blessing of a COMPANION

"Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house" (Psalm 128:3). A father's companion is his faithful wife, a husband is to be to his wife what a wall is to a vine — her support and spiritual strength.

3) The Blessing of a CONTRIBUTION

"Thy children like olive plants round about thy table" (Psalm 128:3). An olive tree, if it is well established, can provide fruit for hundreds of years! It is good when Dad understands that it is his duty and privilege to cultivate his wife's and children’s walk with the Lord. Oh, what a blessing to see your children and grandchildren serving the Lord and making a contribution to this world, "Yea, thou shalt see thy children's children, and peace upon Israel" (Psalm 128:6)

I don't know what kind of family you came from or what the status of your dad is. And it might be the deepest need of your heart today for a dad to hug you and say, "I accept you. I love you." But I tell you on this Father’s Day, there is hope for you! Every child of God has a Father who loves them unconditionally and eternally. May you enjoy the wonderful blessings of fatherhood on this special day.

Blessings,

Dr. Tim Pollock, Senior Pastor
