Revelation or Reason?

February 24, 2020

“For to their power, I bear record, yea, and beyond their power they were willing of themselves;”

2 Corinthians 8:3

One of the incredible things about the God of the Bible is the unique “upside-down” world that characterizes His kingdom. For example, Jesus reminded us that the way up is down, that is, humility promotes prosperity. Certainly, this concept is counterintuitive to human reasoning.

Over the years I’ve come to realize that God’s design for our best life requires that we depend on His revelation, as revealed in the written word, rather than on our reason. Nowhere is this any more graphically true than in the area of giving. Human logic says that before we give to God, we must check to see if tithing fits into our budget. The Bible states, however, that since all wealth belongs to Him (Deuteronomy 10:14), we are to take care of His work first. The Apostle Paul highlighted the Macedonian church as a great example of faith over fear as they gave, “…beyond their power (reasoning)” (2 Corinthians 8:3). Even though the people of this church were experiencing serious adversity they faithfully tithed.

Revelation or reason? And actually, following God’s word is the most reasonable thing we can do for ourselves, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service” (Romans 12:1).

Giving in Faith,

Dr. Tim Pollock, Senior Pastor
