You Can’t Improve Your Flesh

“For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.”

Romans 7:18

Dear Friends,

As I was growing up I realized that I needed to be a better person, which is true. I tried to be better in school, better in sports and many other activities. I soon realized however, that I wasn’t able to be a better person, especially when it came to morals. I just couldn’t consistently do better I would always fall back into the same old habits and struggles. It was a real eye opener after reading the Bible, to realize that being a better person is not accomplished by making my flesh “better”. This realization came to me after reading what Paul said in Romans 7 “nothing good dwells in our flesh”!

The only way to become a “better” person is by transference, that is, that my choices and decisions in my life are guided more from Christ that is in me than by my fleshly nature. The fact is, the more often I make spiritual choices that are according to the scripture and for God’s glory, the “better” I become.

God wants us to get to a point where we understand that it’s not our good efforts that make us better, but it’s our cooperation with the Holy Spirit that is within us. You cannot improve a sin nature, you just allow God’s Holy Spirit to have control of your life.

Thanking God for the Holy Spirit Today,

Dr. Tim Pollock, Senior Pastor
