What Humility is Not

“But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.”

1 Corinthians 15:10

Dear Friends,

Some people think that if you think and say bad things about themselves then that’s a sign of humility. On the contrary, however, often times that’s actually just a veneer for pride. To be sure we shouldn’t speak boastfully of our self either. But constantly demeaning our self is unhealthy. The best plan I’ve heard and tried to practice is to simply give God and others the credit for any merit that’s in our life.

The Apostle Paul was a beautiful example of how we are to approach God; he constantly reminded himself and others that everything that he was and all that he had accomplished in his life was because of the grace of God. As C.S. Lewis said “humility is not thinking less of ourselves it’s simply thinking of ourselves less.”

I’ve noticed that as I set about each day to serve God and be a blessing to people and recognize how good the Lord has been to me despite myself that God blesses me with a special closeness to Him by His grace.

I Am What I Am,
