The Dayspring from On High Hath Visited Us

“Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us, To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

Luke 1:78-79

Dear Friends,

Zacharias, the father of John the Baptist, upon announcing the birth of Jesus proclaimed that a new day had dawned for humanity, “Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us, To give light to them that sit in darkness…” (Luke 1:78-79).

What a wonderful thought – a new day for mankind! Every time a new political administration is voted in there is hope that positive things will happen. Sometimes that happens and other times it does not. But true gospel salvation through Jesus Christ not only encourages us that sins are forgiven us, but also sets up a clear path for the future.

The “dayspring” is the morning Light, the rising Sun as the prophet stated (Malachi 4:2). Nobody ever again has to wander in the darkness of human ignorance. We have as much reason to welcome the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus as those who welcome the morning after a long night.

Matthew Henry gives great insight into the benefits of this truth: “First, the gospel is discovering; it shows us that which before we were utterly in the dark about (vs. 79); Secondly, it is reviving; it brings light to them that sit as condemned prisoners bringing them the tidings of a pardon. Thirdly, it is directing; it is to guide into that way which will bring us to peace at last a way we could never have known of ourselves.”

As the Easter season arrives each spring it is a yearly reminder of the new day for humanity!
